The COVID-19 pandemic took the world by surprise and sent medical professionals to the frontlines of a battle that they were not prepared for. "2020 Year of the Nurse" is a documentary about Black Nurses and practitioners in Virginia, New York, and other cities across the country. The film provides insight into how they fought to save lives from the devastating effects of Covid-19. Despite the lack of personal protective equipment, grueling hours, and civil unrest, these nurses showed up to fulfill their professional oaths. Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system, and their efforts are a testimony to their courage, resilience, and strength.
2020 Year of the Nurse shined the spotlight on Nursing and really allowed the profession to see how we were devalued from the corporate perspective during COVID-19. We shared life-changing stories about our experiences with racism, mental health, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the impact it had on our lives.
As a nurse turned filmmaker, I wrote this film because the medical staff turned to me during the pandemic for mental and physical support due to the devastation and fear they were experiencing. After being a nurse for over 30 years, I have never seen anything this deadly devastate our country and leave the healthcare system in such a panic. I would spend hours in prayer, praying for a cure and protection for our patients and staff. GOD told me to do something, and I began to record their stories and I decided at the height of COVID to record the heart of Nursing and 2020 Year of the Nurse was created. I hope to create understanding, unity and love through our experience with COVID and BLM because we all impacted.

This film is part of History……… caught in real time. I want every nurse, medical team, nursing students, medical students, communities, churches, corporations, school students to really see the heart of nurses and the sacrifices they made to love our communities. I want people to know we gave it our best, even if it cost many nurses their lives. Nurses: our Heroes.
