About Spreading Sunshine

Our Mission
Here at Spreading Sunshine, our mission is to serve families whose children have critical or chronic illnesses by providing practical, emotional and spiritual support

How We Began
Spreading Sunshine began with one family who faced their son David’s diagnosis of Down Syndrome at birth. David’s mom, Abigail, was touched by the kindness and compassion they were shown during the many weeks in the hospital. She saw that other families in the hospital didn’t have the same support and wanted to do something about it. When David (nicknamed “Sunshine” by his sister) was a year old, Abigail sent the very first Sunshine Box to a young girl who was having heart surgery. When others heard about what Abigail had done, they wanted to help. The idea went viral. In almost three years, over 3000 Sunshine Boxes have been sent to families. David and his family sparked a movement of care, compassion and kindness.

What Is a Sunshine Box?
A care package designed to give joy and brighten the day of a family whose child has special needs or a serious medical condition. Each Sunshine Box is filled with yellow and orange items as well as age-appropriate toys and treats to touch the heart, soul, and mind of the recipient.

What Can You Do?
Sunshine Boxes are customized for each child to brighten their day. By sending a Sunshine Box, you can give JOY to a child impacted by chronic illness or special needs. It’s easy!

About the Film

Unseen: How We're Failing Parent Caregivers & Why It Matters

The demands of daily life and chronic stress can negatively affect the mental and physical wellbeing of parents caring for a child or adult with disabilities or complex medical needs. Facing isolation, uncertainty about the future, and a lack of options, caregivers often feel alone in their struggle.

If parent caregivers are ever going to get the support and resources they deserve, they first have to be seen and heard. Through the power of unfiltered, compelling human stories, Unseen cultivates compassion and tangible support for the caregivers in our communities.

Please note, this event is for at-home viewing only. It is not permitted to stream it on social media.
